Hopefully I can put some of these fears to rest. Firstly let's deal with the needles: these are made of solid stainless steel; they are very fine, almost hair like, compared to what you may have experienced at your G.P. surgery or hospital; needles come pre-packaged and sterilised and are used only once before disposal.
There is no pain during treatment - most people find it very relaxing and I even occasionally detect the gentle sounds of snoring. If patients don't watch what I am doing as I carry out the acupuncture, they are often unaware that I have used needles at all and can be surprised when I tell them that their treatment has already started.
For very sensitive or fearful patients or children, there are a variety of methods that can be used to stimulate the acupuncture points. These include heating techniques, magnets and specially designed metal instruments (used to press gently on the skin).
In short, acupuncture is a very comfortable, safe and even pleasurable experience when provided by properly qualified experienced acupuncturists.
